From the Author
My journey into Georgian calligraphy began in 1989. Back then, there was not even a single small textbook to study this art and only a few dedicated enthusiasts practiced it on their own.
While studying reproductions of ancient manuscripts and improving my handwriting, I realized that calligraphy developed along with the art of handwritten books.
I started making my own manuscripts and completed three books in a few years, using different binding methods. These books were the first works of art created in the tradition of Georgian calligraphy after a gap of two centuries.
Since then, I have spent countless hours creating new artworks for various exhibitions and preparing a large amount of teaching materials to promote calligraphy in my country.
My students became professional calligraphers, and soon I founded the Painter-Calligraphers Union of Georgia. This organization is focused on large-scale collaborations, such as creating handwritten books, holding exhibitions and attracting calligraphers from all over the world to our projects.
As a result of our tireless efforts, not only Georgians but also foreigners have shown interest in learning Georgian calligraphy. Following this interest, online classes have been integrated into my teaching experience in recent years.
For independent students, I have prepared this workbook with instructions and practical exercises to help them understand the basics of the modern Georgian alphabet and calligraphy.
